Nobody Is Always Cheapest: What 33,000 Grocery Prices Taught Us About India's Grocery App Price War

Seven weeks of daily price data from BOW, across DMart, BigBasket, Blinkit, Amazon and Flipkart in Mumbai. The verdict: 94% of products changed their cheapest app at least once, every platform holds all-time lows, and the real money is in timing, not loyalty.

Nobody Is Always Cheapest: What 33,000 Grocery Prices Taught Us About India's Grocery App Price War

When we launched BOW earlier this week, we promised a follow-up that answers the question every online grocery shopper in India has argued about at least once: which app is actually the cheapest?

We have now watched prices long enough to give you a data-backed answer, and it is probably not the one you were expecting.

There isn't one. And that is genuinely good news for your wallet.

How we measured

Since mid-May, BOW has checked the price of over 330 everyday products every morning across DMart, BigBasket, Blinkit, Amazon and Flipkart, using a Mumbai delivery location. That adds up to nearly 33,000 individual price observations over seven weeks, including 7,051 product-days where we could compare the same product across two or more apps on the same morning.

That is the dataset behind everything below. No survey, no vibes, no sponsored anything. Just the prices these apps showed, recorded every day.

Finding 1: The lead changes constantly

For every product, we tracked which app had the lowest price each morning. If one app were reliably cheapest, you would see long unbroken runs of a single colour. Here is what we actually see:

Which app had the lowest price that day? Each square is one morning, 20 May to 6 July 2026, coloured by the app with the lowest listed price in Mumbai. A square split into bands means those apps tied for the lowest price that day. Hover or tap a square for every app's price. Blank squares are days we could not compare.

That is salt, atta and mustard oil, about as ordinary as groceries get, and the lowest-price position changes hands like a relay baton. Across all products with enough history:

  • 94% changed their cheapest app at least once in seven weeks.
  • The typical product changed its cheapest app 7 times.
  • On 2 out of 3 products, three or more different apps held the lowest price at some point.

Tata Salt is a 30-rupee product, and still all five apps took a turn as its cheapest source. Fortune Kachi Ghani Mustard Oil changed leaders 28 times in 42 days. This is not noise. This is five well-funded companies actively fighting for your order, one price revision at a time.

Finding 2: Everyone wins a real share of days

Add up all 7,051 head-to-head product-days and count how often each app had the lowest price:

Every single platform takes a meaningful slice. And before anyone reads a ranking into this chart, two important warnings.

First, this split is not stable. When we cut the same data week by week, the shares swing hard. One app's share of cheapest days roughly doubled between early June and early July, while another's fell by a third. A leaderboard that reshuffles itself monthly is not a leaderboard worth pledging loyalty to.

Second, the split reflects our catalog and our city. A different basket of products, or a different pincode, would shuffle the order. The durable finding is not who sits where this month. It is that nobody owns the top and nobody is stuck at the bottom.

Finding 3: Every app holds all-time lows

Here is our favourite chart of the three. For each of the 329 products with price history, we checked which app recorded the lowest price we have ever seen for it:

All-time lows are spread across all five appsOf 329 tracked products, how many have their lowest-ever recorded price on each app.

All five apps hold the all-time low on dozens of products. Whichever app you swear by, and whichever app you swear at, both have been the single best place in Mumbai to buy something we track.

Aashirvaad Whole Wheat Atta 5 kg makes the point beautifully. Its cheapest moments in our data came from four different apps, all within four rupees of each other: ₹257 on one app in early June, ₹258 on another in late May, ₹259 on a third in late June, and ₹261 on a fourth in mid-June. Four apps, four separate windows, each briefly the best deal in the city.

And sometimes a window is dramatic. For over a week in late May, one app sold Fortune Mustard Oil 910 g at ₹137 while everyone else was at ₹190 or above, nearly 30% below the field. Then the window closed overnight and the price snapped back to ₹196. If you caught it, wonderful. If you shopped anywhere else that week out of habit, you paid a half-litre-of-milk premium for loyalty.

Why this matters: the gap on any given day is real money

Turn-taking would be a curiosity if the differences were pennies. They are not. On the median product-day, the gap between the cheapest and the priciest app for the same item was 10%. On one in five days, the gap exceeded 20%. On one in ten, it topped 33%.

We even ran the experiment at basket scale: ten staples (atta, rice, salt, sugar, oil and friends), priced daily. Even for that whole basket, the cheapest single app changed 8 times in 14 comparable days, rotating between three different platforms. Cherry-picking each item from its cheapest app beat even the best single-app basket by up to 6% on some days.

So the honest, data-backed shopping advice is this: stop asking "which app is best" and start asking "is this price good today". The first question has no stable answer. The second one does, and it changes every morning, which is precisely why we built BOW to answer it automatically. Every product gets a plain Buy, Hold or Wait signal against its own price history, the deals page lists everything currently at or near its all-time low, and watchlist alerts ping you when your regulars hit their moment.

The fine print, as always

A few honest boundaries on this analysis. All prices are morning snapshots from a Mumbai delivery location; prices can differ by area and move during the day. We compare listed prices, so delivery fees, membership perks and account-specific coupons, which can change the final math, are not included. Our catalog leans toward packaged staples rather than fresh produce. And none of this measures delivery speed, stock reliability or service, which are real reasons to prefer an app beyond price. BOW remains independent, with no affiliation and no affiliate links. We have no horse in this race; we are just reading the scoreboard out loud.

The takeaway

Five platforms are spending enormous energy undercutting each other on the same packets of atta and salt, week after week. The data says that competition is genuinely working, and that its rewards go to whoever is paying attention on the right morning.

You could be the one paying attention, every single day, across five apps and hundreds of products. Or you could let BOW do the watching and just show up when it says Buy.

Stay curious.
