AMD Brings FSR 4.1 to Radeon RX 6000 Cards Months Ahead of Schedule
AMD's Adrenalin 26.10.1 adds FSR 4.1 upscaling to Radeon RX 6000 desktop GPUs and select Ryzen systems, while handheld updates depend on manufacturers and Xbox support is coming soon.

Radeon RX 6000 desktop owners can get AMD's FSR Upscaling 4.1 sooner than expected. AMD's October 20 release of Adrenalin Edition 26.10.1 adds support for the older GPU family alongside selected Ryzen processors. It is a useful reason to revisit the graphics settings on hardware you already own.
The timing is the surprise. PCWorld's May reporting quoted Jack Huynh setting an early-2027 window for RDNA 2 support. Its October 21 follow-up confirms that RX 6000 owners have received the official release months ahead of that target.
What Changes on RX 6000
AMD says it optimized the INT8 model developed for RX 7000 cards to work on RX 6000 hardware. The company claims improved image quality compared with FSR 3.1 in its announcement. That is AMD's assessment, rather than an LTG benchmark result.
Upscaling reconstructs a higher-resolution image from lower-resolution frames. Frame generation inserts additional frames between rendered ones. AMD describes them as separate features, and its hardware compatibility table lists RX 6000 and RX 7000 support as upscaling-only within FSR “Redstone”. The same table lists FSR 3 frame generation for Radeon RX 5000 series and above, which includes RX 6000; AMD's separate Feature Support table distinguishes this from ML-based frame generation. This announcement should therefore be read as an upscaling upgrade, without assuming it unlocks every newer FSR feature.
For an owner weighing another GPU purchase, the sensible next step is to compare image quality and responsiveness in the games they actually play. A broader compatibility list is welcome; the result on your screen is what determines whether it changes your upgrade plans.
Which Devices Get Support?
AMD's driver release notes name the following additions:
| Hardware | FSR Upscaling 4.1 support in 26.10.1 |
|---|---|
| Radeon RX 6000 series | Listed as supported |
| Ryzen AI Max 300 and 400 series | Listed as supported |
| Ryzen AI 9 300 and 400 series | Listed as supported |
The AI 9 qualifier matters: the list does not establish support for every Ryzen AI laptop. AMD also recommends system-manufacturer drivers for laptops because they are validated for each machine's features.
Handhelds have a separate delivery path. AMD's announcement names Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme, Ryzen Z2 Extreme and Ryzen Z2 A, and describes a more efficient model for those processors and Ryzen AI 9. However, the release notes say AMD's downloadable Adrenalin package does not support handheld gaming devices. Owners need device-specific drivers from their manufacturer, and AMD cautions that availability and timing vary by device.
Xbox Is Still Coming
According to AMD's article, Xbox CTO Scott Van Vliet confirms in the announcement video that FSR Upscaling 4.1 is coming to Xbox Series X and Series S soon. The October 20 announcement supplies no console release date.
Check Your Games Before Expecting an Upgrade
AMD's FSR instructions describe two routes: native support enabled inside a game's menu, or an AMD Software upgrade for compatible games with FSR 3.1 or higher integration. Some menus may still use the FSR 4 name.
For the driver route, AMD directs users to close the game, open Gaming > Graphics in Adrenalin and enable AMD FSR Upscaling, then enable FSR 3.1 in the game's graphics options. Check the supported-game list first: installing the driver alone does not make every game compatible.
The practical benefit is more choice for existing Radeon owners. RX 6000 users can evaluate the official upscaler now, while handheld and Xbox owners need to follow their platform's rollout.
