Liara Is Back in the Leaked Trailer for EA's Canceled Mass Effect
A leaked Mass Effect: Universe trailer brings Liara into a bar fight after EA ended the game's development and announced BioWare's closure.

A trailer for Mass Effect: Universe surfaced on October 22. Bloomberg's Jason Schreier said in his own post that it was a real trailer for the Mass Effect game BioWare had been developing until its closure the previous day.
The cancellation is confirmed directly by EA. In its October 21 announcement, EA said it would stop development of the next Mass Effect and close BioWare and EA's Edmonton workspace. The trailer arrives a day after that announcement, turning a glimpse of a possible future into a record of work that has been cut short.
What the Trailer Shows
According to TalkEsport's account of the footage, the clip follows a human former soldier meeting an asari woman in a bar. Flashbacks touch on his military past and subsequent work, with gunfights, a vehicle chase and romance. Liara T'Soni appears near the end, alongside a betrayal, a bar fight and the Mass Effect: Universe title. Engadget describes the man wearing an N7 trench coat.
That is an evocative setup: a conversation turns dangerous, a familiar character enters the picture, and a larger adventure beckons. It is easy to understand the appeal of seeing a new story take shape around those ingredients.
The production caveat matters, though. TalkEsport reports that the opening identifies the material as in-engine footage made with pre-production assets. That describes how the trailer was assembled; it does not establish how much of the underlying game was playable or how close it was to release. EA's own announcement likewise describes Mass Effect as being in early development.
An authentic trailer can show a creative direction without proving that the team had solved combat, mission design, performance or the many other problems involved in shipping an RPG. The footage gives fans something concrete to discuss, but it cannot settle how good the finished game would have been.
The Leak Has a Traceable Source, but an Anonymous Uploader
TalkEsport reports that Random_Hyabusa_Ninja answered a fan in a thread who had asked for the trailer, and that the user "said they couldn’t make a standalone post because it was a fresh burner account." The account then published a standalone post titled Mass Effect: Universe Trailer in r/masseffect, explaining that it was posted "as requested by the mod team". Schreier's post links to that standalone upload.
Schreier reports that the trailer is authentic. On the uploader's employment, TalkEsport says outlets "differ on whether the poster is a current or former BioWare developer." The uploader's identity remains unverified.
What EA Has Actually Ended
EA's announcement places the decision within a broader effort to concentrate resources on its largest opportunities and pursue fewer simultaneous large-scale action-adventure projects. That explains the publisher's stated priorities, without establishing that this particular game lacked promise. A corporate portfolio decision and a judgment of a trailer's appeal answer different questions.
EA also says it will help affected employees explore other opportunities within the company. That is a stated commitment, with no guarantee of new roles, and a reminder that the consequences extend beyond an unreleased game.
For fans, the painful part is having something tangible to imagine playing after development has stopped. This footage preserves a glimpse of that possibility. Neither an appealing trailer nor Schreier's confirmation supplies a route to release, and the available announcements offer no basis for promising one.
